Getting started is simple

Your smart meter will come with an in-home display which will show you how much energy you’re using in pounds and pence in near real time. To get the best out of your smart meter, you should monitor your energy usage regularly via your display.

With a smart meter, you no longer need to give your energy supplier manual meter readings. Your smart meter shows a digital reading which is automatically sent to your energy supplier at least once a month – meaning you will receive accurate, not estimated, bills. This doesn’t only save you the hassle of submitting manual meter readings, it also ensures you don’t overpay, or get that nasty price increase following an adjustment on an estimated bill.

Three steps to understanding your energy usage

Step 1

To see your standard energy usage, look at your display when only the essential electrical appliances in your house are turned on, i.e. your fridge-freezer.

Step 2

Once you know your standard energy usage, you can test out how turning on other non-essential appliances affects your costs i.e. check your display when boiling the kettle, or washing clothes.

Step 3

With better understanding of how much different electrical appliances cost to run, you can begin to make better decisions about how much electricity you use - how often you use your tumble dryer or dishwasher, for example.
