We are Lead Delivery Partners on the Virgin Media Park & Charge (VPACH) Project, which aims to revolutionise on-street electric vehicle charging in the UK.

The below case study explains how we are working with other consortium partners to deliver this Innovate UK supported EV charging solution for local authorities.

As Lead Delivery Partner, we work closely alongside industry partners and local authorities on the Virgin Media Park & Charge (VPACH) Project.

Supported by Innovate UK – the UK Government’s innovation agency – VPACH aims to install 1,200 electric vehicle chargers across the country by the end of March 2021 as part of a project consortium which includes several local authorities.

By building a fully-scalable electric vehicle charging network – which leverages Virgin Media’s 40,000 powered street cabinets and 170,000 km of ducts – the project provides local authorities and charge point operators with a solution to limited on-street electric car charging points, thereby encouraging more people to use EVs and contributing to the UK government’s goal of reducing carbon emissions to net zero by 2050.

As one the UK’s leading energy services and utility connections management providers – counting on our 25-year history of delivering complex energy infrastructure projects – we have been appointed Lead Delivery Partner for the VPACH project.

Aside from taking a leading role in coordinating the delivery of the project, we call on our extensive knowledge of the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) process, as well our major utility project management expertise to ensure the project is a success.

Customer demand tool

VPACH commenced in October 2019 and is now entering the critical build phase as we provide project management direction for the consortium to deliver installation of charge points across local authority areas. Other key project objectives include the delivery of an intuitive customer demand tool, which will be designed and managed by SMS but shared with participating local authorities in order to capture and display EV demand in their areas.

Solar car park

Furthermore, SMS are leading the design, build and commissioning of a solar car park in one local authority area as part of VPACH. The solar car park model is a key part of the project as it will help local authorities generate power from renewable energy for the purpose of EV charging and provide additional support with the challenge of moving to a net-zero emissions target.

At SMS, we are proud to deliver a complete energy service to our customers, offering smart metering & data, energy strategy and carbon reduction asset funding, as well as future-facing grid infrastructure solutions.

All of the services we offer are geared towards supporting the decarbonisation of the UK's energy network, and the establishment of a smarter, greener and more sustainable energy system that works better for consumers.

We work with the UK private & public sectors to build bespoke zero-carbon energy strategies and to fund, deliver and operate green energy assets, utilising our data-driven services, deep engineering skills, and asset financing capability. Find out more about our full range of services.
