Smart meter installs rebound after winter lockdown

Installing a smart meter during covid

Smart meter installations across the UK have rebounded after the recent winter lockdown restricted engineers in some parts of the country from visiting homes and businesses.

According to latest data from ElectraLink – the regulated central body that operates the UK energy market data hub – there were 219,000 installs completed in March 2021, 34 percent more than the month before. This month-on-month increase comes as COVID-19 infection rates continue to fall amid the success of the NHS vaccination programme.

There were also 30 percent more installations in March 2021 compared to the same month last year, when on Monday 23rd March 2020 the initial pandemic disruption forced the smart meter rollout to a temporary halt.

Latest Government statistics state that there was a total of 23.6 million smart and advanced meters installed in homes and small businesses in Great Britain by the end of last year, representing 42% of all meters in the country.

All visits from the UK’s smart meter engineers remain COVID-safe, with mandatory measures to prevent transmission of the virus.
