After careful consideration of the latest government guidelines and, crucially, the stringent COVID-19 control measures SMS has successfully implemented since June 2020 to protect employees and customers, we have taken the decision to continue installation works across the UK.
Following announcements made by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon on Monday 4th January 2021, England and Scotland have entered new national lockdowns after similar national measures already undertaken in Wales and Northern Ireland.
The latest COVID-19 restrictions – which will see schools, pubs, restaurants, gyms and non-essential shops close – allow for people to leave their households where it is “unreasonable” to work from home, including those involved in “critical national infrastructure, construction or manufacturing that require in-person attendance”.
After careful consideration of the latest government guidelines and, crucially, the stringent COVID19 control measures SMS has successfully implemented since June 2020 to protect employee and customers, we have taken the decision to continue the installation of smart meters across UK domestic and commercial sites, in addition to the emergency and maintenance works we provide.
In adherence with these guidelines and SMS’s COVID19-secure health and safety policies and protocols, we will also continue as normal with our other energy and construction projects such as utility connections works and carbon reduction (CaRe) asset installations.
With England's lockdown rules due to be reviewed on 15 February, and Scotland's at the end of January, we continue to monitor the situation closely and are constantly reviewing our own approach and practices based on the latest Government advice.
Health & Safety at SMS
At SMS, health and safety is of paramount importance and our number one core value. We have been and will continue to operate as a COVID-secure business with the very highest of health and safety measures in place, ensuring that we can continue to operate safely in the field.
Throughout the pandemic, SMS has additionally assisted in safeguarding the security and stability of the UK's energy supply and metering infrastructure through the provision of essential maintenance. As we see out another period of national lockdown, a regular flow of gas and power will be needed to support our most vulnerable citizens, to keep hospitals running, and the economy moving.
In addition to rolling out smart meters and other energy services for our customers, we will continue to maintain these essential supplies, whilst also doing everything we can to protect the health and wellbeing of our customers, our employees, and the wider public.
