Sustainability at SMS

The scale and urgency of global action required for climate change to be halted and reversed has come to the forefront of the political and economic agenda. Our business is intrinsically linked with tackling one of the greatest challenges of our time, and we are proud to be utilising our passion and innovation to work with the global community as part of the solution.

Our commitment is evident in our vision to be at the heart of the smart, low-carbon energy revolution and we have built our services around transforming and decarbonising the UK energy system. This means that reducing CO2 emissions and improving the energy efficiency of our company and our customers (including millions of end-consumers across the UK) through our smart metering and energy-saving solutions, is our guiding mission as a business.

Internally, we have taken strides to improve the sustainability of our operations, including more efficient fleet management, reduced business travel, improved building efficiency, the introduction of an ISO-accredited Energy Management System, and the establishment of a Board-level Health, Safety & Sustainability Committee. We also continue to take a well-rounded sustainable approach to supporting our employees and customers through our commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance and as a signatory of the United Nation’s Global Compact.

In our annual Sustainability Report, we provide disclosure on the practical steps we are taking to progress ESG and sustainability within SMS’s strategy and culture, propelled by our core company values. Through our reporting, we continuously focus on improving our disclosure and datasets to better share our performance and improve ESG processes in accordance with industry best practice.

Net Zero 2030: Our journey to carbon neutrality

By the end of the decade, SMS will become a carbon neutral business through our Net Zero 2030 roadmap. As a signatory of the Climate Pledge and United Nations Road to Zero campaign, we have committed to reducing our organisational carbon emissions over the next decade across our buildings and vehicles (Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, excluding grid battery emissions) to a point where our business activities cancel out as much CO2 from the atmosphere as they produce.
